This beautiful town is named after its patron San Pedro (Saint Peter), and the word Atacama, which, according to the ancestors, comes from "Accatchca" in the Cunza language and means Head of the country.

The Church of San Pedro de Atacama was built as a parish before 1641. In March 1557 the provitero Cristóbal Díaz gave mass at the ayllu of San Pedro de Atacama, with Juan, the main chief of Atacama and the other Indians.
