GEYSERS DEL TATIO

Located on the Andean mountain range, 99 kilometers from San Pedro de Atacama, Geothermic field located 4.320 meters above sea level. The water vapor to the surface through fissures in the earth's crust, reaching a temperature of 85ºC. At dawn, with temperatures below zero, you can witness an extraordinary and amazing sight, generated by violent flows of vapor that reach a height of up to 10 meters. 40 geysers, 60 springs, and 70 "fumarolas" that extend over 3 square kilometers form this geothermic field. In 1960, CORFO started a project to use this geothermic energy to generate electricity, but the results did not guarantee financial profit. The only thing left from this is the camp that remains intact and receives the visit of scientist as well as tourists.

MACHUCA

Machuca lies to the northeast of San Pedro de Atacama, located at an altitude of more than 4,000 meters. Most of its population migrated to nearby villages leaving it practically uninhabited. Fortunately, several municipal projects of San Pedro de Acatama have slowly brought back some of the population, thus improving Machucas situation with the revival of agricultural activities, shepherding, cheese production, and tourism. Machuca has a small and beautiful wetland where small families of flamingoes, ducks and seagulls live together. You can also see the lamas that belong to the inhabitants.
