CaspanaThis village is located 84 kilometers from Calama in the upper section of the Loa River, at 3,300 meters above sea level. Caspana is located in a deep stream that extends for 8 kilometers and with the Caspana River alongside of it ...

caspanaThis village is known for its architecture in liparita stone, with straw and clay roofs and with narrow streets paved in stone. The church has a colonial Andean design and on the 3rd of February it holds a celebration to its patron the virgin of Candelaria. Offerings, rogation prayers for rain, blessings to the river and to the cultivation fields are carried out during the 3 days that the celebration lasts. The original Caspana people spoke the quechua language, thus maintaining a clear difference with those who spoke the kunza language. Today, many maintain their deeply rooted Andean traditions and continue to speak their language.

caspanaThe river provides a permanent irrigation system, assuring the irrigation to the agricultural cultivations located on the terraces. It is due to this, that the inhabitants mainly cultivate vegetables such as lettuce, parsley, cilantro, broad beans, alfalfa, and fruits. They also raise llamas, goats, alpacas, donkeys, and sheep.
