This village is found 38 kilometers from San Pedro de Atacama and at 2475 meters above sea level. It is an oasis, whose sweet waters, free of arsenic, allow for the cultivation of a variety of fruit trees such as pears, plums, quince, and grapes as well as a large amount of vegetables. The distribution of water for irrigation is done through a complex network of channels and water shift systems.
This small pre-Hispanic settlement has an interesting architecture in local liparita stone, which is a volcanic soft and white stone, extracted from a quarry 2 kilometers up the local street. Another tourist attraction site is the Jerez stream, located at the base of the quarry, in the shape of a large box surrounded by vegetation with the water flowing freely. It is an ideal place to relax, have a picnic or simply a place to escape from the high temperatures.
On the 18th of October, the village of Toconao holds their celebration to their patron saint San Lucas. This festivity consists of a vigil, a celebration, and a farewell. All the inhabitants participate in processions and religious dances. |
