This Pre-Hispanic village is located near a rocky cliff, offering a marvelous view of the mountain range peaks and the cultivation terraces.
This village with a population of approximately 100 people is located on the high plateau at 3,600 meters above sea level and 83 kilometers from Calama at the source (bed) of the Toconce River. This village has been built in terraces that squeeze into the valley, with ancient buildings made of stone walls and straw roofs. They live off farming, herding, and from breeding domestic birds. Their main crops are vegetables, broad beans, potatoes, and corn. The population was larger in the past, but many abandoned Toconce and migrated to Calama to work in the mines, leaving a growing agricultural economy behind. Currently, the Toconce water provides drinking water to Calama and to Antofagasta, among other cities, through various dams. This village maintains deeply rooted celebrities and community festivities, such as the channel cleaning in October, livestock flowering, and the Carnival in February. |
