|
|
Located to the East of the Salar de Atacama, 62 kilometers from San Pedro de Atacama and 2,300 meters above sea level, Soncor is a system of lagoons and fertile plains where the Chaxa Lagoon stands out ...
On the surface of Salar de Atacama you can observe salt crusts generated by the accumulation of crystals produced by the evaporation of the underground saline waters. In this sector you can find chloride crusts of up to 70 cms. high. These are transition crusts in the shape of polygons and whereas the sulphade crusts are smooth. In this area you can also find muddy lagoons that are not very deep, one of which is the beautiful Chaxa Lagoon where you can find Parinas and Flamingoes besides other types of birds such as the "Chorlo de Puna", "Playero de Baird", and the Andean Gull among others. These birds feed on microscopic forms such as one-cell algae, and micro invertebrates. Visit the Flamingo National Reserve at sunset to get a glance of the beautiful sky colors reflected on these shallow waters and enjoy as well, the beauty of the parinas as they feed. |
