Forms part of the Flamenco National Reserve100 kilometers from San Pedro de Atacama, at 4,300 meters above sea level. With a surface of 48 km2, it lies between fertile plains, rivers and lagoons, where it is common to see Atacamanean families shepherding llamas ...
Here you can find volcanic structures and wavy plains, and to the East of the Salar you can see the slopes caused by erosion. The Guardianes of Paganá are a collection of huge rock pillars in different shapes molded by the wind. They stand out beautifully on the desert's sand. You can also enjoy the splendor of the Farallón de Tara, a great stonewall carved by the wind in the shape of a sculpture.
As you continue on the Salar path, you reach the Tara Lagoon that forms part of the Flamenco National Reserve. It lies on a surface area of 3 to 25 km², depending on the time of year. It feeds from the Zapaleri River that runs 20 kilometers from Bolivia , ending its flow on the eastern side of the lagoon. The lagoon helps keep the flora and fauna of the area alive. The flora of the region is made up of wetlands (bofedales), yellow straw, coirón (a type of stiff, tough grass), tola de agua and tola amaia. The fauna includes 3 varieties of flamingoes, vicuñas, culpeo foxes, chululos, caitíes (Andean Avocet), Andean seagulls, chorlos de la puna, pato jergón (Chilean Teal), guallata goose, among others.
